The brain functions in many older people begin to deteriorate because the cells of the brain start to degenerate as we get older. If we have maintained a healthy lifestyle, then the degenerative process of the brain slows down and our brain functions remain active for a longer time.

The brain is the most active and oft-neglected muscle in the body. Don’t spend all your free time lazing in front of the television/laptop screen.  Put in the added effort to keep your brain healthy sharp with the help of these tips and tricks:

 

Memorise!
Memorise anything… or at least as much as you possibly can. Whether it’s a friend’s phone number, the route to your dentist, your grocery shopping list, or that recipe you’ve been wanting to try out, commit it to memory. Memorisation challenges the brain, keeps it focused, and agile.

 

Brain games
Brain games helps in stimulating the brain cells to act faster. Games such as Puzzels, Sudoku, Crosswords, Chess etc also helps in increasing the concentration and alertness.

 

Exercise
Regular exercising increases the blood flow to the brain, stabilizes the heart rate and promotes the birth of new neurons, making your brain healthier.

 

Learn a Foreign language
Apart from being added in yourresume, learning a foreign language can flex your brain cells for healthy functioning. When the brain is learning new sounds and alphabets, its concentration level goes quite high.

 

Sleep well
Nothing can substitute a good amount of sleep. Good amount of sleep is best for the brain in today’s fast and stressful life. For the relaxation of body and mind undisturbed sleep is must.

This is a given. Reading keeps the brain stimulated, forcing you to imagine a fictional world through words rather than imagery. Do make time for some form of reading daily to keep the brain active.

 

Eat right
Proper diet is the key for the healthy and active brain. Therefore, it is important to add leafy vegetables and fresh fruits to your daily diet as they are rich source of antioxidants that prevents your brain from damage. Fish and dry fruits especially walnuts and almonds are said to be the best for the health of the brain.

 

Lower Your Cholesterol
As we may already know, high cholesterol levels in the body can lead to adverse health effects, including major diseases like heart ailments, which can eventually cause heart attacks! However, we may not have known of the fact that high cholesterol levels in the body can cause the premature degeneration of brain cells.
